Hoffmann von Fallersleben unternahm 1819 seine erste Reise in die Niederlande. Zahlreiche Werke Hoffmanns bezeugen sein Interesse für das niederländische Sprachgebiet. Aus seiner Autobiographie, seinen Tagebüchern, Notizen, den Vorlesungen, der Korrespondenz sowie aus seinen Zeitungsartikeln lassen sich Erkenntnisse über seine Beziehungen in die Niederlande und nach Belgien ableiten. Aber weder die Beziehungen noch sein Belgien- und Niederlandebild sind bis heute erschöpfend erforscht worden. Diese Untersuchung will Hoffmanns Beziehungen zu den Niederlanden und zum nachmaligen Belgien sowie das Netzwerk, das er dort aufbaute, anhand seiner Korrespondenz und der Akten zu seiner Person rekonstruieren. Hoffmann schildert ein diffuses Bild der Nachbarn, das von einer deutsch-nationalen Einstellung geprägt ist. Zu fragen ist, ob sein positives Verhalten und seine negativen Äußerungen lediglich ideologisch motiviert waren und vorwiegend daher rührten, daß er, wie viele deutsche Intellektuelle im 19. Jahrhundert, versuchte, die Niederlande und Belgien einem deutschen Staatsgefüge einzugliedern, oder ob er vielmehr als Kulturvermittler zu gelten hat. Hoffmanns Briefwechsel umfaßt, soweit sich jetzt feststellen läßt, über 7000 Briefe, die hier erstmals in einem Verzeichnis erfaßt sind. Daneben werden unveröffentlichte Materialien aus deutschen, belgischen und niederländischen Archiven, die bisher in der Forschung nicht berücksichtigt wurden, vorgestellt.

In 1773, Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Society of Jesus. For the 823 Jesuits living in the Low Countries, it meant the end of their institutional religious life. In the Austrian Netherlands, the Jesuits were put under strict surveillance, but in the Dutch Republic they were able to continue their missionary work. It is this regional contrast and the opportunities it offered for the Order to survive that make the Low Countries an exceptional and interesting case in Jesuit history.00Just as in White Russia, former Jesuits and new Jesuits in the Low Countries prepared for the restoration of the Order, with the help of other religious, priests, and lay benefactors. In 1814, eight days before the restoration of the Society by Pope Pius VII, the novitiate near Ghent opened with eleven candidates from all over the United Netherlands. Barely twenty years later, the Order in the Low Countries - by then counting one hundred members - formed an independent Belgian Province. A separate Dutch Province followed in 1850. Obviously, the reestablishment, with new churches and new colleges, carried a heavy survival burden: in the face of their old enemies and the black legends they revived, the Jesuits had to retrieve their true identity, which had been suppressed for forty years.

Lotteries, Art Markets, and Visual Culture examines lotteries as devices for distributing images and art objects, and constructing their value in the former Low Countries. Alongside the fairs and before specialist auction sales were established, they were an atypical but popular and large-scale form of the art trade. As part of a growing entrepreneurial sensibility based on speculation and a sense of risk, they lay behind many innovations. This study looks at their actors, networks and strategies. It considers the objects at stake, their value, and the forms of visual communication intended to boost an appetite for ownership. Ultimately, it contemplates how the lottery culture impacted notions of Fortune and Vanitas in the visual arts.

Sinds de middeleeuwen heeft het deltagebied aan de Noordzee een gedeelde naam: de Lage Landen. Ze waren het slagveld voor alle grote Europese oorlogen, ze waren al vroeg vermaard om hun bloeiende handelseconomieën, maar een staatkundige eenheid heeft er nooit willen beklijven. In deze nieuwe blik op de rijke politieke geschiedenis van deze gebieden, blijkt dat de politieke culturen van Nederland en België teruggaan op een gedeelde traditie, waarin enerzijds de eigenheid wordt verdedigd en anderzijds moet worden samengewerkt. Hoe er in de afgelopen zes eeuwen verschillende oplossingen groeiden voor die samenwerking, is wat dit boek onderzoekt. Het Noorden is vooral gericht op gezag en goed bestuur, en zoekt nog altijd door overleg naar consensus. Het Zuiden functioneert door oppositie en conflict, en vindt vanuit verdeeldheid het compromis. Deze dynamieken verklaren een fundamenteel andere verhouding tot hun overheden. De Lage Landen. Een geschiedenis voor vandaag voert de lezer doorheen zes eeuwen van onze geschiedenis met nadruk op de veranderende structuren en hun gevolgen op vandaag. Historici Henk te Velde, Judith Pollmann en Marnix Beyen zijn de deskundige gidsen. Zij presenteren het in een aantrekkelijk verhaal, een afgewogen stijl en een compacte vorm. Het resultaat van hun samenwerking is een onmisbare eigentijdse benadering van wat ver teruggaat en nog altijd doorleeft.

Seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings were aesthetic, intellectual, and economic touchstones in the Parisian art world of the Revolutionary era, but their importance within this framework, while frequently acknowledged, never attracted much subsequent attention. Darius A. Spieth’s inquiry into Revolutionary Paris and the Market for Netherlandish Art reveals the dominance of “Golden Age” pictures in the artistic discourse and sales transactions before, during, and after the French Revolution. A broadly based statistical investigation, undertaken as part of this study, shows that the upheaval reduced prices for Netherlandish paintings by about 55% compared to the Old Regime, and that it took until after the July Revolution of 1830 for art prices to return where they stood before 1789.
